The costs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the quality of life of COPD patients with ventilation therapy
Evidence regarding COPD treatment costs and the epidemiology in Germany is scarce. For patients with a severe COPD, long-term oxygen therapy (LOT) or (non-)invasive respiration (home ventilation) can be therapy options. In Germany, however, the proportion of patients receiving home ventilation is low, although it could increase the quality of life and reduce the costs. The aim of the project is to analyse the costs and the quality of life of COPD patients. The main focus of the evaluation is to analyse the influence of home ventilation and the inpatient framework. The cost analysis is based on the claims data of the German statutory health insurance fund. The methods consist of descriptive analyses and appropriate regression models. The quality of life of the patients will be evaluated using generic and disease-specific quality of life questionnaires.
